Brown Bag Seminar @ Aldo Leopold Foundation

April 20, 2018 @ 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM

Gather for a presentation by author and writing coach, Robert Root, regarding the journey of creating his new book Walking Home Ground: In the Footsteps of Muir, Leopold, and Derleth. Many visionaries of the conservation field have lived in Wisconsin throughout their lives. In this book, Root explores the terrain these writers once called home and the writing in which they shared the feelings their walks inspired. He discovers how these writers drew on other writers before them and sometimes on each other. Observing the changes in their landscapes over the past two centuries, he learns how to walk the land where he lives now and how to connect more deeply to his own home ground. Experiencing both the glacial past and the ecological present in a journey across Wisconsin landscapes simultaneously literary and physical, Root offers a way for readers and listeners to connect to their own home ground.

Robert Root’s nonfiction of place includes the essay collection Postscripts: Retrospections on Time and Place and the travel narratives Recovering Ruth: A Biographer’s Tale, named a Michigan Notable Book 2004 by Library of Michigan;Following Isabella: Travels in Colorado Then and Now; and Walking Home Ground: In the Footsteps of Muir, Leopold, and Derleth. He is also the author of The Nonfictionist’s Guide: On Reading and Writing Nonfiction and the editor ofLandscapes With Figures: The Nonfiction of Place. He is a writing coach who lives in Waukesha, Wisconsin and teaches online for the Loft Literary Center in Minnesota. His website is www.rootwriting.com.
